    Goodbye Nice, Finished Basement

Well, after over a year of dealing with wet basement carpet and slowly tearing it up piece by piece...we finally got all the basement carpet taken out yesterday.  It is very sad.  Before, we had a huge finished area that was somewhat cozy with the carpet and a space that we used all the time.  The only before picture I could find was this picture taken at our Friends Thanksgiving Dinner a few years ago.  We obviously don't always have the long table down there, but you can see the carpet a little and how the whole space was nice and a good place to entertain.

Well, here's what it looked like yesterday after the carpet and baseboards were gone and the furniture moved out of the way.

It's depressing.  I feel like the whole value of our house just went way down.  We looked into having the whole space waterproofed and then putting down new carpet...but it was going to be like $7000.  Too much for us when we want to get new carpet upstairs before the baby comes and when we are now a one-income family.  So, we decided to wait on the waterproofing.  Instead, for about $400, we bought floor paint, an area rug and a new desk for Daniel to try to make the space at least more presentable again.  Hopefully, this crazy rain that we had this year will calm down, and it won't get as wet down there.  And we have a meeting with a carpet guy tomorrow about getting new carpet in our upstairs living area, which makes me very excited.  Right now the living room carpet is stained and smelly.  Once all these projects are finished, I'll post more pictures.  I love before and after pictures!

Speaking of pictures, Maggie was sitting next to Daniel on the couch last night, looking very cute, and I couldn't resist a picture.  She likes to sit like humans do; unfortunately she isn't very lady-like.  We need to teach her how to cross her legs!
